Cordobesa has already answered your question, but remember, soy is used for characteristics like your name, where you are from, etc. In other words, soy is used for permanent situations.

Example: I am from the United States-Soy de los Estados Unidos.

I am in class today- Estoy en clase hoy.

I went to class today.-Fui a clase hoy.
