Filling in profile should be mandatory.

Question

It is most unhelpful to try to help people when they haven't filled in the language questions on the profile. We evidently have people visiting who are proficient in neither English nor Spanish, but when the profile is left blank it's impossible to know how to start helping them.

With the already massive changes that have been made to this site, surely it's within the realm of possibility to only allow registration to those who complete the profile requirements?

I agree with you on this.

I think it is not good to assume that if a question is asked in English, the person who asks it must be fluent in English, and vice versa. I, for one, would love to try asking in Spanish so I not only get an answer but also get my question corrected. In that way I learn how to formulate a question properly in Spanish.

Also, some people might not be very good with either English or Spanish, perhaps they are very young and are just beginning to learn. In that case, trying to explain something complicated like phrasal verbs will require alot of care, something easier for us if we knew we had to do it for this particular person.

Yes, Sally, as there are people who are learning both languages, it is useful to know their native language, and English and Spanish proficiency. but it is hard to believe that all these new people have absolutely no knowledge of Spanish or English.

Also, if you are asking a question about either language, it would be very helpful to know how proficient the person who answers you is with the language. For example, I am an Intermediate Spanish student. When I ask a question about Spanish, I want to know that the person who gives me the answer has at least the proficiency that I do or greater.
