"I am retired" in Spanish

Question

Would "estoy jubilado" be the correct translation? I used pensionado and was not understood, although I may not of pronounced it right.

Zalone, welcome to the forum! You could also say 'estoy retirado'. Here is what you get from our dictionary entry for retired.

Here is an explanation from one of my Spanish teachers (who says that "retirado" is normally used for retired military people.)

"It would be better to say "Estoy jubilado" since "retired" is an adjective here (sorry I missed that in class). Are you asking this because the verb is "jubilarse" is reflexive? If you use it as a verb, like "I'm going to retire next year", you would say "Me voy a jubilar ...". It is reflexive because you could use the verb non-reflexively to retire something/ someone else.

When you use the descriptive adjective "retired", you would not need that pronoun. However, if you did add it, I doubt that it would even be noticed by Spanish speakers, as they might think that you were adding it for emphasis or you learned your Spanish from a different Spanish speaking region/country."

I always say Estoy jubilado mi mujer está jubilada tambien and unlike with professions you use estar and not ser e.g. Cuando trabajaba era techador. When I was working I was a roofer.
