Good question. I've always wondered about that, too. - Goldie_Miel, Feb 17, 2012

Both can mean about. There is really no big difference, but I think acerca de is just a bit more formal "Me preguntó acerca de mis vacaciones. Quería saber a dónde viajé." OR "Me preguntó sobre mis vacaciones. Quería saber a dónde viajé." Sobre can also mean "over" like in "El libro está sobre la mesa."

Sobre means above/over/on top of/ about etc. Acerca de means close by/ near to and it can also mean about something.

Ken, you're thinking of "cerca" vs. "acerca (de)" - Goldie_Miel, Feb 17, 2012
In regards to being near to something. - Goldie_Miel, Feb 17, 2012
