You would not answer with two negatives in this instance. It would simply be: "No, pero antes comía." The answering with two negatives is done when you're answering no to an affirmative question and offering the negation after, which happens in English as well.

Were you eating? No, I was not eating.

¿Estabas comiendo? No, no estaba comiendo.

The first negation is to answer the question, and the second is to make the second statement true.

Notice that in the sentences in the question asked there was a question of whether someone did something, and the person said no, but didn't offer a negation. Rather, a qualification was given to the negative response, which does not require a second negation.
