Is there a difference between "no sé" and "no conozco"?

Is there a difference between "no sé" and "no conozco"?

I know "no sé" means the same as "I don't know". I was wondering if "no conozco" would be equally acceptable.

Is there any time one would be preferred to the other (differences in implication, etc.)?

Saber is usually used to refer to knowing a fact whereas conocer is usually used to refer to knowing a person or a place. This is a general guideline and of course ther are exceptions.

No sé = I don't know (about some thing/fact)

¿Quién sabe? = Who knows?

I have never seen conocer used interchangeably in these kinds of sentences above and believe that only saber would be correct here especially in the first example!.

Pregunta: ''¿Conoces a un buen médico en esta ciudad? '' = Do you know a good doctor in this city?

Contesta: ''Sí, conozco a señora Garcia que vive cerca de la plaza mayor en número 57 calle de San Marco''

='' Yes, I know Mrs Garcia who lives near the main square at number 57, St Marks street''

I hope this helpsgrin
