Question about the ordinal number 'primer'

We use 'primer' (first) instead of 'primero' when it precedes a singular masculine noun. And for a singular feminine noun, plural feminine noun and plural masculine noun we use 'primera', 'primeras' and 'primeros' respectively. So my question is, what is the use of 'primero'?

Hola Johnastsang, bienvenido a SpanishDict! smile

Hello Johna, welcome to SpanishDict.

When it isn't next to another noun. Or, as it would seem from our dictionary, when it precedes a month or some other noun that requires the use of "de" next to primero.

Lo primero.

El primero de mayo.

Kind of like uno. If uno is next to a masculine noun you say "un" like "un hombre."

By the way, a similar question has been asked before, read it here.
