As Tosh wrote, " Prefiero viaje en verano",yo is also not needed. Prefiero is first person singular present of preferir so "yo" is understood.

Welcome to the fora mate. I cannot determine from your profile whether you
are from or whether you are a native speaker or not , did you want that statement
translated or do you just want to talk about traveling and at which time of year
that you prefer to travel ?
Cuando viajo esta a menudo cerca del ecuador , verano o invierno son los mismos, muy caliente.
When I travel it is often near to the equator , summer or winter there are the same, very hot.

You don't need the "el":
Prefiero viajar en verano.
I prefer to travel in (the) summer.
