Words may be regional but a word that we hear for the lanes in swimming is 'pista'. You didn't ask that. It's just a freebie. ;o)

"Largo" means the length of the longest side of a swimming pool, not a lane in one. - lazarus1907, Feb 10, 2012
"largo" is the length of a swimming pool but is also used for counting the amount of times you go from one side of the pool to the other. At least in Argentina - pamela-b, Feb 10, 2012

In Spain we say "Nado por la mañana" in general, and "Hago [number] largos por la mañana" to specify a number.

sounds to me like laps (for swimming) are called largos in spain. Yo hago 25 largos por la mañana. Thanks for the help. - kmeza, Feb 10, 2012

a lap swim would be a "largo" in Spanish but it's countable. e.i. you can say "Hice 20 largos esta mañana" (sth like "I did 20 lap swims this morning" but I don't know if lap swim is ****able) another option would be "Nado a la mañana" if it's a regular action or "Hago natación a la mañana" smile

People actually say "I do lap swim." in California?! (I had to check your profile [to me it sounds like something a foreigner might say]). This is the first time I've ever encountered anything other than "I swim laps."

It is called "lap swim" by the aquatic center. Now the action itself, is swimming laps. - kmeza, Feb 10, 2012
Well, live and learn (although, nowdays, it's mostly live and forget). - samdie, Feb 10, 2012

In Mexico the word for "laps" is "vueltas". (Or aol least that's the word that is commonly used where I am, in Jalisco.) If you are from California, "vueltas" might be a word that would be more commonly heard than "largos".

"Nado [X] vueltas por la mañana" - I do lap swimming in the morning; I swim [X] laps in the morning.

I am just wondering. Could you say "hago vueltas por la mañana" as a slang way of saying it? - Bootstrap, Feb 10, 2012
