What does le or les mean before a word? Example:
Ella (she) LE vende (sold) un cuaderno (a notebook) al hombre (to the man). What does the LE mean and why is it used?

I'll answer your question with another question: why do you use "it" in this sentence:

I like it a lot when you sing that song

In most languages, Spanish included, that "it" is not just redundant, but grammatically incorrect; it must be suppressed. And yet, English requires it for some reason (there is one, by the way).

The simple answer to both questions is that you just have to use those pronouns; period. The long answer requires pages of explanations, but basically, they to provide clues for the native listeners so they can interpret your words correctly. If you suppress it, your listener would be trying to interpret your words in a different way, and he will be forced to be constantly reinterpreting your words to try to make sense out of them, which is rather tiring.

Would it be correct to leave it out in some cases. Ex: Me habló a mí. Me habló. Habló a mí. ??? Are any but the first one correct? - Pinolero, Feb 9, 2012
