Jeremias when I looked this word hasta up in my Spanish Dictionary it said that sentences with a future meaning would have hasta que + subjunctive (present) -

Excellent point Feliz, well taken. There are two possible answers to how to say "Until she was sleepy".

I'll read to her until until she is sleepy - Voy a leerle a ella hasta que tenga sueño.

I read to her until she was sleepy - Le leí a ella hasta que tuviera sueño.

And, judging by the other responses, in the past hasta que is taking the subjunctive as well.

Do you mean to say "until she was asleep?" Then, "hasta que ella sintiera sueño, or "hasta que ella tuviera sueño" I am guessing that is the context of that fragment.

• The whole sentence should read something like this. Yo le leía un libro hasta que ella tuviera sueño, ..hasta que ella sintiera sueño. (I read her a book... until she was asleep)

I think you could say it this way:

= Hasta que ella tuviera sueño

.....but I am not a native so please wait for confirmation from a more advanced speaker

I believe that it would be, "hasta que ella tenía sueño" Once again, though, you want to wait for a native speaker or someone more fluent in Spanidh than me.
