What is the difference between pedir and preguntar?

Welcome to the forum. Preguntar means to ask a question. Pedir means to ask for something, like a favor, etc.

Preguntar ----> make a question, like you are doing now.
Pedir---> ask for a favor or thing that you need someone give you (a request)

Be aware that pedir means to ask for or request (for) something. The "for" is included, so if you wanted to say to someone, "Please ask for a menu," you would say:
Por favor, pedir un menú or Por favor, pida un menú.
She asked for a sign from heaven. (Ella) le pidió una señal del cielo.
