Hello. This is a really interesting question.

Ella se quedó afuera = She remained/stayed outside

Se quedó afuera = She remained/stayed outside

I do not know how you are trying to use the word ''instead'' We sometimes use it in English by itself as you have done but only where the meaning is already implied/understood by the people communicating.. The word would only make sense in this context if you had already indicated what you meant by it

For example:

She stayed outside instead of returning back to her house

= Ella se quedó afuera en vez* de volver a su casa.

.If this full sentence above was later repeated by one person to another it could be shortened to intead...and the rest of the sentence need not be included because the full meaning would be understood.

(o en lugar de)*
