Any advise on how to master the preterit?

Revise it daily for about 2 or 3 weeks and it will start to stick. Mainly just focus on the irregulars because that is the trickest part to this tense.

Start talking, writing, reading and listening as much as you can, paying special attention to the preterite or whatever you happen to be focusing on. Using the language is the only way to truly master it.
