Why do I need son with ustedes?
Can any of you please explain why I need to put son with ustedes and es with usted? i.e.
Ustedes son estudiantes/Usted es estudiante
Many thanks for your help

Because usted is 2nd person singular and requires 2nd person singular conjugations (es, in this case) and ustedes is 2nd person plural and requires 2nd person plural conjugations (son, in this case).
Welcome to the forum. The reference section here has some good information about conjugating Spanish verbs.
