Período VS periodo

Período VS periodo

So I see both, and I have mostly (almost exclusively) heard "periodo".

In fact, one of my friends asked me what the difference was, and I said I thought they were mostly equal. This information I gathered through the internet. But I just got corrected to "período" from "periodo" from Chileno so I figured I'd post this in a separate thread in case anyone else needed to know the difference.

My sentence?

No hay ningún período histórico que atraiga a todos los venezolanos.

Why período VS periodo?

Gracias.

I just realized that the dictionary here also has it both ways. - mountaingirl123, Jan 30, 2012

I asked a colleague from Honduras about this very question a few years ago, and she said that it is totally regional. She indicated that both are correct. As I recall, our text book had it one way, but in Mexico it is pronounced and written the other way.
