So I guess convenga is convenir - to be convenient or suitable.

Complete the lessons according to whats suitable / appropriate. Does "según" activate subjunctive then when used with a conjugated verb?

I've seen "según afirmó" according to what he said.......

and

según afirma el hombre - according to what he says.

so

Según afirme el hombre - according to whatever he happens to say?

so

según "convenga" vs según "conviene"

would be

whatever happens to be appropiate VS whatever is appropriate.

and why isn't it

según les convenga? that seems much better to me?

In this case, "según convenga" means "as appropriate".

Según les convenga means "at their convenience"

Como le sea conveniente: as you / he see(s) fit, at your / his convenience.

según "convenga" vs según "conviene"

would be

whatever happens to be appropiate VS whatever is appropriate.

Yes for the first one. Según conviene can also mean "as convenient", depending on context.
