A lot of English words have very broad meanings. For example, Dictionary.com has 39 definitions for the word "keep". I think that we don't realize how broad the meanings of our everyday words can be. smile I have thought about the same question, and it seems to me that English and Spanish are roughly the same in how broad the meanings of words can be. But I am no expert.

I think that most likely, the two languages are pretty much equal in the amount of broad definitions. We just don't notice them because we are used to them. The same goes for irregular verbs or the spelling of a word. There are lots of irregularities in English if you go looking for them but for those that are native speakers, they are just intuitive.

I agree with Sofronio. Imagine all the Spanish translations for the word "get" in English!
