You can just type, but that would defeat the purpose. If typing is all you wanna do, you are just fine here (SD)

With Skype you can listen and be heard. If you have a camera you can see and be seen.

All this in order to take advantage and hone your listening/speaking skills, and to see or be seen as to how to put your mouth to utter sounds etc...

The very least, a mic is what is needed!

not having a webcam is not a problem =) You can even have skype on your iPhone, which has a built in mic too. When my friend had recently got an iPhone we were talking on skype and he said the voice quaility was so much better with skype, hahahaha - broca23, May 7, 2013

It is a chat service, where you can meet and talk to people either by voice, video or just by writing.

It is very helpful, as it allows one, to see the other's mouth (ie when explaining how to put the mouth, etc. You can listen the pronunciantion and allow to write the fonetics.

eg:

pohr fah-VOHR = por favor
