In your examples, mi as in mi madre is a possessive pronoun meaning "my".
Me as in me llamo is a reflexive pronoun meaning "myself". - I call myself... (whatever).
There are many types of pronouns in Spanish, just as in English, and you have to learn them.
You must use "mi" when you're talking about posession: "She's my mother" (Ella es mi madre), "Welcome to my home" (Bienvenido a mi casa).
"Me" is an accusative. It's used when I receive the verbal action.
