Which verb?

Question

I am trying to say "He was the co-founder of the Cubist movement." Do I use fue or estuve? Or do I use something else?

"Èl _______ co-fundador del Movimiento Cubista"

Fue is the correct answer.

You found the place only once, the explanation would be correct for a supporter.

Fue del movimiento socialista. ok, he is not any more. Or he is dead.

I think the question should be do you use "fue" or "era". In a sentence like this I don't think "estar" would be used in any capacity in this form. Today one of my professors, who is also a linguist, explained that the verb "ser" is a like a gift in the Spanish language when it is used in the past tense. Most of the time it can be used in both the preterite or imperfect tense and pretty much have the same meaning.

In a sentence like yours a lot depends on context. For example, if you say "Él era co-fundadora del movimiento cubista" you are making a description, and there is no real concern about time periods- just providing background info. However, when you use "fue" it typically means (not always-lots of grey areas) that he was a founder, but no longer either supports this movement (switched to the other side), or is now dead.

I think you use fue since the usage is referring to the occupation. Look for other answers for check.
