La Mujer de Casa

I think this question is midway between "vocabulary" and "culture" ... maybe. It is a common English phrase (the woman of the house); is it ever used in Spanish? In Ireland it seems to imply a degree of respect; in US less so, being given over to more commercial uses. (Yes, I am attempting, some more, to write in Spanish, silly me!) thanks in advance for your comments .... alt text

In English "Man of the House" traditionally means the breadwinner. I am uncertain if your question is asking if there exists a spanish equivalent of the same.

I think the word "hacendosa" is relative to this discussion.

¡buena suerte!

Okay, I guess it is not a Spanish turn of phrase. I was attempting to deal with the proverb: Every woman is a lady in her own home. (parallel to Every man's home is his castle.) I make this to be: "Cada mujer es una doña en su propia casa." or maybe "Cada mujer es una señora en su propia casa." I really do not want a term for housewife, hence my reference to "woman of the house" being something of a compliment in Ireland. And from there, I was noodling with "Every woman is a beautiful lady when she is happy." = "Cada mujer es una señora hermosa cuando ella es contenta." (Yes, I will need the "ella" there, as there are sentences dealing with what makes a guy seem great, and/or makes him happy ... carrot cake, for instance. ?)

Woman or head of the house ...... El ama de la casa.

Man of the house ..... El amo de la casa.

Amo(a) does not mean "lover of the house."

Me parece raro este "el ama." Me pregunto porque así es. - Goldie_Miel, Jan 26, 2012
