In an example for today's word 'cartera', a sentence read 'mi esposa y mis hijos la tiene'. Why is the verb tener used in the singular and not in the plural?

I too think it shoud be "tienen", because the subject (mi esposa y mis hijos) is plural. Perhaps it was simply a mistake?
