As regards librar having more meanings I believe it can also mean "to save someone from something of danger" as well as to save someone from some obligation, ie, to free them from it.

Líbranos del mal - Deliver us from evil (Religious) ¡Dios nos libre! - God forbid!. Esto me libra de toda responsabilidad - This absolves me or frees me from all responsibility

to free somebody (from something/from doing something);

That is librar. It has more meanings...

Liberar to free, like in you were imprisoned, you were freed.

In money talking, the meanings are totally different:

Librar un cheque : to write a check.

Liberar un cheque : to remove a hold from a check.

.

These are used in Argentina.

Cool! I had never heard "librar un cheque". I love it when I can learn new uses like that. :-) - Gekkosan, Jan 24, 2012
