Salir, salida - as way, answer?

La única salida era casarme con su hermana. A line from Como agua para chocolate.
The only way (to be close to Tita) was to marry her sister.
Edit: does it just mean exit in a poetic way or does it mean way or something, like salir can mean to cost? and have other meaning?

This means "the only way out of this mess was to marry her sister."
"Remedio" would have worked, but "La única salida" give us the understanding of his feeling imprisioned with this problem.
