You´re right. And the two words are obviously quite different.
The choice of words for "condolences" I believe is regional. Also used are "condolencias" and in Mexico it´s very common to say "Te acompaño en el sentimiento."
Also:
Nuestro más sentido pésame.
Lo siento mucho is used in Spain on hearing of a bereavement.
