Hi and welcome to the forum.

"Homey" is the slang word you are thinking of. "Homey" or "Home boy". It is slang for a member of one's group in the "Gangsta" culture.

I stand corrected by people who actually knew the origen of Holmey! Elementary and all that.

It refers to Larry Holmes, Heavy Weight champion boxer from the late 70‘s into the 80‘s. It's like saying “tough guy“ or “dude.“ It has nothing to do with the term “homie,“ or “homeboy.“

I don't know about English, but I have never heard any of those expressions in Spanish.

Right, they are from American gangsta culture. I assume Bruce was asking about English. Maybe not. - Jeremias, Jan 23, 2012
You may be right. I assumed he was asking about its use in by spanish speakers. - gringojrf, Jan 23, 2012

Its Holmes.."Homes" "Homey" .. , yes it means ..good friend, buddy, a friend that would be equivelent to a brother... Some gangs use it as the latter.. "close friend, like a brother"

As for the "watson" thing, that would imply that some one would be the inferior one and Holmes is meant to be an equal partner.

So homeboys know about Sherlock Holmes? Guau.. - Jeremias, Jan 23, 2012
D: Watson is definitely not inferior to Holmes!!! @_@ They had different strengths, certainly, but Watson was an impressive character all his own. - VictoriaRose, Jan 23, 2012

I'm pretty sure wiki got this right and its short for "home boy", originally meaning someone from the home country (and been used long before Larry Homes was born !), and when used, usually means "buddy". Pretty exclusively used by the Latinos in the US, rarely used in the UK. In England the term "mate" might be used similarly ("mate" being rarely used in the US, where pal or buddy is more common).

(ps. I've always assumed it was Mexican American slang. Would Cubans or Puerto Ricans use it in the US?)

It's " Holmes ". The "L" is silent. Yes "homey" is short for this . It is used in a friendly way to signify being someones "Watson".

The "L" really isn't silent... because it isn't pronounced "Homes"... but the "L" is sorta mixed with the "M". - Tosh, Jan 23, 2012
