estoy arreglando el coche

Question

I learned today that:

'Estoy arreglando el coche' can be translated as 'I am repairing my car' (ie myself) or 'I am having my car repaired' (ie impersonal)

What is the correct way to explicitly say that it is me who is repairing the car? Would I say something like:

'Estoy arreglando el coche por mi cuenta'

Hola Billy, tu frase y la Terri son las más explícitas sin ninguna duda. También puedes decir "Estoy arreglándome el coche", pero según quien lo diga puedes pensar una cosa u otra. - RaulSpaniard, Jan 23, 2012

Billy, this is a very good question.

The answer is: there is no way of differentiating between those, and in fact, this kind of misunderstanding is very frequent in Spanish.

We speak this way:

Estoy arreglando el coche

¿Quién, tú?

No hombre no, que lo he llevado al taller

---

Me he cortado el pelo

¿Tú solito?

No, tonto, que me he ido a cortar el pelo.

Je,je, buena pregunta. Como yo nunca he reparado mi coche, nunca me lo he planteado Cualquiera de las dos formas que habéis sugerido es perfecta: "Estoy arreglando el coche por mi cuenta" o "Estoy arreglando el coche yo misma".

Estoy arreglando mi coche yo mismo. (assuming it's your car)

Estoy arreglando su coche yo mismo. (for his, her, your car)

But, of course, best to wait for native speakers.
