Are both of these equally acceptable?
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (estudias)?
¿Cuánto tiempo (has estado estudiando)?
Sé que ésta es probablemente una pregunta simple con una respuesta sencilla pero en este momento estoy lenta de entenderaras. Gracias por tener paciencia conmigo.

Both are good sentences. To me, however, the meanings are different.
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (estudias)? outside a specific context, may mean "How long have you been a student?" (It could also mean "how long have you been studying").
¿Cuánto tiempo (has estado estudiando)?Just means "How long (how much time) have you been studying (so far today for example)."
