Both of those answers are pretty misleading. A profesor/a is a teacher. However, a *catedrático, -a * is a Professor in the English sense you're looking for.

For example: "I'm an English teacher" = Soy profesor de inglés

"I'm an English Professor" = Soy un catedrático de inglés

Here's a link to our dictionary so you can see what I'm getting at grin

catedrático, -a

You want to make a clear distinction between "teacher" and "professor". Profesor is a "false friend" it just means "teacher"

I am an engineering professor and heard someone call me this in Perú - catedrático.. Is this common in all Spanish countries or just a few. Nothing wrong with profesor but was curious due to the ambiguous nature of word. - emac, Jul 31, 2015

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We have a great dictionary on the top bar. Here is the link for professor.

el profesor (male), la profesora (female)
