From the context, I'm pretty sure that you meant to use está (with the tilde on the "a"). Esta (without the tilde) means "this" as in "this shirt."
The verb "to be" has two forms, ser and estar. es and son are forms of ser and está is a form estar.
The dictionary on this site gives the complete conjugations for both verbs. Lesson 1.11 on this site discusses when to ser vs. estar.
