Deber

to have to do something, duty, to owe

Special thanks to Foxluv for the idea for this word

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs should not be longer than 1 1/2 lines but can have up to 3 line for practice.
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Mucha gente cree que el éxito de una persona se debe o al trabajo duro o a la suerte. Personalmente, me gusta pensar que trabajo duro crea suerte.

A lot of people believe that people’s success is due to either hard work or dumb luck. Personally, I like to think that hard work creates luck.

Your sentence makes one ponder about that crazy thing called life, Chris..instead of "chiripa" would "destino" or "suerte" work here? - drvicente, Jan 20, 2012
Thanks Vicente....I tried chiripa....but I think you are right - suerte sounds better.... :) - 001a2987, Jan 20, 2012

El capitán del barco debe ser el último en abandonarlo en caso de hundimiento.

With Annierats' corrections:

The captain should be the last to leave the sinking ship

Original: The ship captain must be the last one to leave it in case of sinking.

Corrected.- Voy al baño cuando puedo ir no cuando debo ir. Está más seguro

Realmente debo arreglar mi coche. Está todavía lleno de cosas de nuestro viaje el mes pasado... ¡pero hace mucho frío afuera! ¡No quiero hacerlo!

I really must tidy up my car. It's still full of things from our trip last month... but it's very cold outside! I don't want to do it!
