Only puedo preguntar algo would be ok, I think. If ask, Can I ask YOU a question? Then it would be Te puedo preguntar algo? Or puedo preguntarte?

Is there a good article on when you can use dativos and when you can't? The grammar books I've been reading mention them, but aren't very clear on their use. I'd prefer an article in Spanish, but English woud be OK.
