Because I thought it was cool. Which turned out to be a good decision, because 2 years after I started learning Spanish my family moved to Venezuela. That worked out well.
I hope to someday be a police detective in NYC, or an FBI agent, and in both of these jobs being bi- (or tri-!) lingual is very advantageous. Plus, I'd like to be able to publish fanfiction in Spanish as well as English and expand my audience. I chose Spanish because my dad spoke some to me as a kid, and I find myself remembering more of my childhood every time I learn more Spanish.
I've always wanted to learn it, but never buckled down to do it. Now, the company that I work for is owned by a company in Monterrey, Mexico. I want to be able to communicate more effectively with the people that work in the main office. I was lucky and got to take a trip there in November, and that really helped my Spanish. I was only there for 1 week, but I felt that I progressed more in that week than in the prior 9 months studying. Of course, without the prior 9 months, I would have been totally lost there.
So, why are you learning Spanish?
I'm learning English. There's not a particular reason for me, but I can say some things: 1) Once upon a time I knew some American students who taught us (some friends and me) some English (these students were great people!), then I realized I really liked the language and I started to learn it by myself, using the internet and that stuff. 2) English as a second language is REALLY useful for getting a job. I mean, it's a great professional tool. 3) I'm studying engineering and, as you may know, there're a lot of texts and books that are only found in English. (I didn't have to read a book in English yet, but I have read many texts from the internet).
There're more reasons that I can't list now but I think those are enough to learn it, don't you think? ![]()
Learning spanish helps a lot in getting into colleges and if you didn't know 12 percent of the people who live in the US speak spanish as there first language.
Learning a second language has always been one of my goals. I chose Spanish because it's a beautiful language, and also because offers the most opportunity for finding people with whom to practice.
I love reading the news in my local edition of El Mundo.
Thanks a lot for the link to the older thread, Mary, this has been discussed many times, thanks for doing a search![]()
