Inverse vs Reverse

This is perhaps a pretty technical question.

I was having a conversation with a cousin of mine from Mexico who is a Psychology major. I apparently made the blunder of saying 'psicología reversa' to say 'reverse psychology' in Spanish instead of the correct way: 'psicología inversa' (in other words 'inverse' psychology). He explained that using 'reverse' (at least in Spanish) wouldn't make any sense because it would imply regressing, such as going back in time to a persons infant psychological state rather than applying an opposite belief resulting from reactance.

My question: Are there any differences in the words 'reverse' and 'inverse' in Spanish and English? Or is the English way of describing this phenomenon technically incorrect?

Reversa does not make it because in Spanish means "atrás, hacia atrás"

Inversa o al revés would qualify.
