Aqui es donde puedes aprender más. Here is where you can learn more.
"How you feel and where you are is how you use the verb 'estar'"
"Ser" is used with the following subjects:
- time (Es la una. Son las dos.)
- possession (El cuaderno es de Alex. Los perros son de Alex.)
- description (Alex es alto. Los muchachos son atléticos.)
- origin (Alex es francés. Los hombres son rusos.)
- nationality (Alex es de Francia. Los hombres son de Rusia.)
"Estar" is used with the following subjects:
- condition (Alex está triste. Las muchachas están enfermas.)
- location (Alex está en el colegio. Los profesores están en los salones de clase.)
- gerund (Alex está comiendo. Los actores están ensayando.)
These lists are not all inclusive, of course, for there are exceptions as in all languages.
Ser and estar both mean "to be".
Estar is generally used for location (I'm at home right now), health (including physical states and emotions) and for ongoing actions (e.g. Estoy corriendo: I am running).
Ser is generally used for nationality and place of origin, characteristics (e.g. color), time and date, occupation and generalizations (e.g. it's nice to be home).
Hope this helps.
