In Mexico, what is the proper way to refer to the child of a first cousin? Should they be called "el primo" or "el sobino"?

If the "first cousin once removed" is the son or daughter of your first cousin, then you call him or her "sobrino(a)" and he or she calls you "tio o tia" If the "first cousin once removed" is the first cousin of your parent, then you call him or her, "tio" or "tia". And you are his or hers "sobrino" or "sobrina".

Not to straddle the line, but I have heard a woman refer to the same child as both her "sobrino" and her "primo segundo" in Mexico.

If you are needing to be specifically clear when visiting with a Mexican about genealogical topics, you might consider being wordy, such as: "Ay, sí, Juanito es su sobrino, o sea el hijo de su primo ¿verdad?

Actually in Mexico the child of a first cousin is your nephew. You are their Uncle. So the answer is Sobrino.

I am not an uncle to my cousins, I am their cousin as well. - gringojrf, Jan 16, 2012
Actually, you do it out of respect. It's just thing that we do. My cousins baby is my nephew, and I'm also an aunt to another cousin's baby. It's not literal. - volleybear14, Jan 20, 2012

A cousin once removed would be "primo segundo."
