rebasar why exceed speed limit

Question

why is rebasar used in rebasar la velocidad for breaking the speed limit. Maybe I'm asking what does rebasar mean? and how is it used and when?

"Rebasar el límite de velocidad" is a common way to say "to exceed the speed limit". I agree with gringojrf that it is probably used in the sense of "to pass the speed limit", since "rebasar" is also used meaning to pass a vehicle.

rebasar.

1. tr. Pasar o exceder de cierto límite.

2. tr. En una marcha, progresión, etc., dejar atrás, adelantar.

3. tr. Mar. Pasar, navegando, más allá de un buque, cabo, escollo u otro cualquier estorbo o peligro.

Here is a guess. Rebasar is used for pass, as in do not pass (other cars) when double yellow line. So maybe it is passing the speed limit in the same sense. Although I have never heard it used this way. In Mexico they use Exceder.
