Good evening! I'm a native English speaker, and am learning Spanish. It's been a long while since I've used the Answers section--too long, I think. Anyway, I want to practice the vocabulary and grammar from the "Learn Spanish" section, lessons 1.1 thru 1.11. I will also try to include some words from my various interests.

Buenas noches. ¿Cómo está? Estoy bien.

Thanks for reading! I hope I'm using words and phrases correctly.

I believe here we need to take the gerunds and change them to infinitives.

Escribiendo --> escribir

Leyendo --> leer

Tengo veintiséis años de edad.

The "de edad" is entirely optional.

Me gustan leer, ver las películas y estudiar astronomía.

This should be Me gusta. It's an exception. It seems plural, right? Well, when multiple infinitives follow "gustar", it must be gusta.

That's all I saw. Keep in mind I'm not a native, so wait for some more respuestas smile

Good Job!

Thank you so much for the help! I've been told in the past that I should not use an infinitive after another infinitive, but rather should use a gerund after an infinitive. How sure are you about those? - arocoun, Jan 14, 2012
The difference is: practicar what (noun.. leer....infinitive) practicar how (by reading & writing the words) adverb gerundio. The gerundo often meany "by" or "while" doing something. - 0074b507, Jan 14, 2012
The gerundio is often an adverb answering how, when, where, why the infiintive (noun) answers what., who - 0074b507, Jan 14, 2012
Great explanation, Q. Arocoun, that's interesting advice...I don't know how I feel about it, jeje. "Leer" and "escribir" are infinitives, yes, but in this case they are acting as nouns. - SonrisaDelSol, Jan 14, 2012

bueno, en la primera observación es correcto decir "Necesito practicar escribiendo. Escribo lentamente. Es difícil sin práctica. Uso mucho los Flashcards para practicar leyendo y escribiendo las palabras. ¡Son muy útiles!" yo lo escribiría así: Necesito practirar mi escritura, ya que escribo lento"

la segunda observación es correcta.

la tercera yo la escribiría así: "me gusta leer, ver películas y estudiar gastronomía"

Son las cinco y treinta y cuatro de la noche.

The use of the two Y's made me notice something that I never had before.

All the numbers in Spanish up to media hora (30) are one word. Son las cinco y... seis, ...quince, ....veintinueve. It is only past 30 minutes that you need numbers with another Y.

Is that why Spanish usually changes to Son las seis menos veintiséis rather than having to say Son las cinco y trienta y cuatro. If, after the half hour, you switch to the until method you don't have to use that double Y. I knew of the practice, but I never thought of a possible reason for why it is done since we do the same thing in English.

Mi gato está en la mesa.

Mi gato está encima de la mesa.

I think that is used more for pets being on furniture. Mi gato está en la cocina.

Not a native so they can tell you which is used more.

una pequeña aclaración:

The use of the two Y's made me notice something that I never had before.

de hecho en español es correcto escribir: "treinta y cinco" y "treintaicinco";

cuarenta y cuatro, cuarentaicuatro; cincuenta y cinco, cincuentaicinco.

excepto del veinte al veintinueve, en este caso es un error escribir "veinte y uno" etc.
