Subjunctive vs. condicional

Subjunctive vs. condicional

When can the conditional replace the subjunctive?

Here is an example of a statement I wanted to post as a comment on an author's website:

Yo deseo que el autor permitiría sus libros para ser publicado como audiolibros.

Okay, "permitiria" is condicional. But, in most other senses, I've come expect that any verb in a subordinate clause following a wierdo verb, where the subject of the subordinate clause is different from the subject of the independent clause is subjunctive. But here the conditional seems to be more appropriate.

Next, "ser publicado" also seems like, perhaps, it should be be something like "sea" publicado but now I know I'm further out on a limb in my abilities and understanding. Finally, should it be ser (or sea) publicados because the subjects and objects are plural?

Thanks for your always fun and rewarding insights.

I think you are confusing what should be conjugated to subjunctive. It should be the verb and not the noun in both phrases of the sentence.

Yo deseo que el autor permitiría sus libros para ser publicado como audiolibros.

Try it like this:

Deseo que el autor permitiera que sus libros fueran publicados como audiolibros.

(Subjuntivo - Pretérito imperfecto o Pretérito) both phrases

In this sentence, there is no need for conditional in either phrase,
