Hi:

su (your) is used with Usted and Ustedes. (Formal)

tu (your) is used with . (Informal)

Be formal with strangers, grandparents, parents, teachers, boss, directors, manegers, etc. Those you have to respect.

Be informal with youngers, friends, brothers and sisters, sport partners. Those you see as equal in importance.

Tu and su are possessive pronouns. Tu is used for you (informal). Su is used for he, she, it, you (formal), or they. The differences in you (informal) or you (formal) are that the informal is used when talking to a friend, a child, etc. and the formal is used for talking to a parent, boss, teacher, etc. When in doubt, use su. It's better to be more polite than necessary than to be impolite.

Some examples:

¿Son tus zapatos? - Are they your shoes?

No, no son mis zapatos. Son sus zapatos. - No, they are not my shoes. They are her shoes.

It's the same reason you use tu and su in other ways.

Tu is used to address someone you know rather personally, a friend ,your sister, a colleague or associate at school.

Su is like Ud and is used to refer to persons with more respect like a doctor, someone you don't know like the postman (unless you know him) the presidente, the pope, a business cliente who is new, your Pastor, anybody you don't know very personally or to be deemed with professional respect.

In other words su sueter is someone you don't know very well. and tu sueter is a very familiar person..
