Questions about this paragraph
Anteayer Luis y Ana tenían que reunirse con algunos amigos.Sacaron el coche del garaje y se pusieron en camino.A los pocos metros se produjo un terrible atasco. Toda la calle estaba llena de coches, pero ninguno avanzaba. La espera duró un cuarto de hora. Cuando otra vez se pusieron en camino,Luis y Ana decidieron aparcar el coche en alguna parte y tomar el metro. Bajaron al túnel y esta vez tuvieron suerte. Se acercaron al andén justo cuando llegó un tren. Viajaron así una o dos paradas.De repente les avisaron que había una avería y el tren no podía seguir adelante. Fue preciso bajar. Los dos salieron del metro junto con los demás pasajeros.Anduvieron hasta una parada de autobuses. Había mucha cola, porque el problema de tráfico era igual en todas partes. Por fin pudieron subir a un autobús , pero tuvieron que viajar de pie. Se acercaron a un restaurante y entraron.
Cuando se saludaban y se abrazaban, los recién llegados se excusaron de su retraso.
I have a few questions about this paragraph.
1..Se produjo, I think it's passive here, was produced traffic, Am I right?
2..What does it mean by Fue preciso bajar?
3.Why se saludaban y se abrazaban here are all pretérito imperfecto de indicativo, but why se excusaron here is past tense?
4..I can say les excusaron instead of se excusaron?
5.. Why in this paragraph has tenían que and tuvieron que? Why not the same tense?

No.1- Estoy de acuerdo con tigo. El atasco didn't produce anything, therefore the reflexive giving you the passive voice.
No.2- I believe that preciso and necesario are synonyms. I have ran across it quite a bit, especially in Castilian Spanish. "It was necessary to get off"
No.3-I have no clue... Maybe there were a lot of people to greet and hug, therefore the "continuing action". Then, they apologized to everyone as a group, (all at once). lol ??
No.4-Not sure I understand... The paragraph says, "se excusaron". Were they not just excusing themselves for being late?
No.5-Oh grief, I'm stuck. I would have turned the two around!!!
