Recommendations for Guest House/Hostel In Madrid

My question is, does anyone have a personal recommendation of a specific place to stay in Madrid. I've seen one or two other posts which basically said, "Google it," but I'm looking for something more specific. Actual names of reputable places.

I'll be traveling with female friend of mine. We're looking for something cheap like a guest house or hostel, we don't need a fancy 5 or even 3 star hotel. Just somewhere quiet, safe, friendly, private, and secure to lay our heads down at night. We'll be there for about 7 days in total, and would also like to stay at the same place if possible. We're not there to party or to 'experience' the night life. We're more interested in the cultural aspect, and of course, to practice our Spanish. We're looking at spending between 30-40 in US dollars a night.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. If not I'll just stick to Google. :-D

gracias

Well whatever you do don't stay in Hi tech hotel, they said we owed them hundreds of euros for breakfasts we never ate and then called the police (who arrived in full riot gear with guns) when we complained and refused to pay. - rabbitwho, Jan 3, 2012

I stayed in the Equity Point in Barcelona and it's gorgeous and cheap, heard good things about the Girona one too, if you don't mind hostels. You can see reviews of the Madrid one here:

As you can see the dorms aren't too big. They do private rooms as well.

Hostel world is great, you can pretty much always trust the reviews. Watch out for people who are two fussy though. "Room as too hot!" Why didn't you just turn off the rad or open the window then? "Breakfast wasn't included!" What did you expect for 15 euro a night?

Oh someone said equity point in Madrid have a one key per room policy! Don't bother going there! I hate that! You get woken up in the middle of the night and you have to wake other people up too. - rabbitwho, Jan 3, 2012

I don't know any hostal personally, but I do know the areaswink

This hostal looks really good, it is in a gay area, very friendly, right in the centre of Madrid, walking distance to Puerta del Sol and everywhere.

This one looks good too, very centrical, right off the Gran Vía.

Hostal Salamanca, I know this placewink, crossing the street there is a small park...walking distance to Plaza de Toros, Goya, shopping areas, short bus or underground ride to Cibeles where you have all the museums.

If you want to be in the thick of things..I've stayed at the Hotel Paris (yes, the Hotel Paris in Madrid) on the Puerta Del Sol It's not quiet, but it is cheap and has a decent restaurant. It's centrally located near the Corte Ingles, busses, etc. I think I've stayed there 3 times (visited Spain 5 times).
