Could somebody please tell me why "hacia is necessary in these sentences?

"Ve hacia arriba..." and "Mira hacia arriba..." for example, "

Couldn't we say: Ve arriba a el cielo." ?

Thanks for your help.

You don't " A el " because it is a contraction. It becones " AL." - kmaakheru, Jan 3, 2012

You could say "Mira al cielo." but you can't say "a el".

Usually "arriba" is a location above, while "hacia arriba" is the direction upwards.
