I once heard it said that the average person has to hear a new word fifty-one times before it is fixed in thier mind.

I like to write sentences using the word as many ways as I can think of. The try to use it in conversation.

Let it sit and do it again tomorrow.

You can work on multiple words at a time.

When I was in High School and College, I used to make up "cheat sheets" for tests.

I never had to use them, because just the act of making them up was a great way to learn, and to remember, the information.

I have a flashcard app on my iPhone and the same holds true... just typing the words in really helps to remember them. Then it is based on a formula that as you see the flashcard and get it correct, the less you see it.

I write the words on my stomach using lipstick, photograph myself in embarrassing poses, and post the photos on facebook. It is very effective, but it may not work for everyone.

If it's a noun, I always try to create a mental picture of the item. I also find that saying the word out loud several times, helps to plant it in my head. If you are learning the items in your house, you can label them and say the word out loud each time you pass by it.

Good luck!
