Cómodo

comfortable, convenient

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 31, 2012.

Special thanks to Tosh for the idea for this word

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Me gustaría tener un sofá que fuera muy cómodo, pero sería peligroso – es posible que nunca lo deje.

I would like to have a really comfortable couch, but it would be dangerous – it is possible that I would never leave it.

Es posible que....is the great subjunctive setup, Chris jejejeje... - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
jeje - gracias Vicente - I have trouble when I think - would...I use conditional, and don't even consider the subjunctive...jeez...see - the simplest things confuse me... :) - 001a2987, Jan 1, 2012
Could you send one of those cushions? I have to sit on the floor, so that Wolfie has the chair... - annierats, Jan 1, 2012
Es posible que nunca lo deje...you would use present subjunctive because "es posible" is present. - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
Gracias Vicente.... :) lol Annie.... - 001a2987, Jan 1, 2012

Hu, keep telling you, it means a night dress, why does nobody believe me? - annierats, Jan 1, 2012
What is a night dress? - Tosh, Jan 1, 2012
Annie, You mean "camiseta rosada= night dress" ? - PrincessMariam, Jan 1, 2012
I'm curious what she means, too. Camiseta rosada = pink T-shirt. Camisa rosada = pink (dress) shirt. - Tosh, Jan 1, 2012
I wear pink dress shirts to work sometimes. I used "camiseta" in the post so it would match the picture. - Tosh, Jan 1, 2012

Aunque viajando por taxi sea cómodo, prefiero ir a pie si no falta mucho para llegar

With drvicente's corrections:

Aunque sea cómodo viajar en taxi, prefiero ir a pie si no estará muy lejano para alcanzar

Although travelling by taxi is comfortable, I prefer to walk if there isn't too far to go.

Are you like me and you are just throwing the subjunctive in anywhere now? :) I'm going to guess that it should be "es cómodo", but I'll check back to see if I need to go to the dunce corner. ;) - Tosh, Jan 1, 2012
Typo - although. - Tosh, Jan 1, 2012
exactly Tosh. I've decided there is no point 'playing safe' with word of the day. I have learned so much by throwing things in, then reading further when I see the corrections. - billygoat, Jan 1, 2012
I am trying to go by gut feeling rather than perceived rules. You never know, one day I might actually understand it lol - billygoat, Jan 1, 2012

No tengo los pies dolorosos porque hallé unos zapatos a la moda que están cómodos también. (Se venden en la tienda en la esquina de las calles "en tus" y "sueños".)

I don't have sore feet because I found fashionable shoes that are also comfortable. (They're on sale at the store on the corner of the streets "in your" and "dreams".)

jeje - I never like airplane seats...jeje....your tenses look right (to me), but I think asiento is more common for a seat on a plane than silla.... :) - 001a2987, Jan 1, 2012
