Not long from now I'm going to chile and I'm wondering if anyone of you have been there before and can tell me the differences between castellano from spain and chilean castellano? Is it hard to understand people there? I would say I'm a beginner in spanish and I'm a bit afraid of living in Santiago if I cannot understand people! Do they have some slang/ typical chilean words? Mil gracias por tu ayuda!

Hello Yoko. I concur with Annie's answer. If you wish you can use the search box at the top of the Answers page and search for "Latin American Spanish". You should find a lot of threads that talk about this subject, and mention some of the differences you might expect.

Altogether, though, you will be understood, and if people realize that you're not a native speaker, they will adjust their speed and vocabulary to help you out.

Have fun! I envy you. You will have no problems. I have now been to several classes in Spanish( Ilive in England) and all the various pupils who have been to South America have told me that they find South American Spanish easier. My latest teacher, una Mexicana, told us that she could never go to Spain because they speak such bad Spanish there. So, good luck, keep in touch with us and enjoy yourself!
