Era mi amiga / fue mi amiga

Era mi amiga / fue mi amiga

I know we've beat this dead horse a thousand times, but

She is dead, he holds her in his arms

he says "Luchó. Está muerta pero luchó"

other girl says "Era tu......."

and he says "Era mi amiga". Now I think he says

"Era mi amiga" because the other girl starts with "era"

because "Fue mi amiga" seems like it would work better there but I have noticed people often respond using the same format.

Gracias.

"Fue mi amiga" seems like it would work better ....

Never!

Fue mi amiga would sound too harsh and cold in the given context. Can you suddenly forget all the good moments you spent with her, only because she's died? She has her friend in mind, so she has to use "era", as she is remembering their friendship. One would use era here, without a single doubt.

So era works better with sentiment? - jeezzle, Dec 28, 2011

Your reasoning seems logical to me. Also perhaps because the death was so recent the imperfect allowed him to focus on the time that was their friendship rather than her life that is now over, as a completed event?
