I understand that both mean still, I wonder whether they are used the same way.

They are pretty much the same when meaning still, in the sense of yet:

Todavía está aquí, Aún está aquí. He is still here.

However aún has additional meanings, which you can look up in the dictionary.

I hope this is not a stupid question but I must ask it. Why when a sentence is ambiguous, in terms of gender, the translation is always 'his'& not 'her's'or ''it's'' ? - Acelata, Dec 27, 2011

Hi!!!

"Aún" means "Still" ... "Todavía" means "Yet".

E.g.

¿Aún me amas? / Do you still love me?.

No he terminado mi tarea todavía / I haven't finished my homework yet.

Son sinónimos. En todas las situaciones se puede intercambiar las dos palabras.
