Did you knock over the statue? Yes, I knocked it over, but it was an accident.
This is a very formal word. You can hear it on news or read it on newspapers, but it is not very common at normal speaking. I mean, if I want to express 'The ship fell down'. I would say 'El barco se dio vuelta', and not 'El barco se volcó'. (It also depends on who you are talking to)

After the Haiti earthquake the whole world threw itself into the reconstruction of the country.
